The music of Mozart and Chopin, or Chopin and Debussy. How many times have we found that they match one another in the most natural of ways? The phenomenal Lívia Rév formulated the dilemma of compiling a programme thus: “I thought long and hard about what to prepare and in the end Mozart and Chopin remained. Alongside them all other composers are vacuous and waffle.” Gergely Bogányi would similarly be delighted to assemble concert programmes solely from works by these two masters. One only need refer to the nocturnes or preludes to show what strong links there are between Debussy and the music of Chopin. “Sooner or later, and preferably sooner, every pianist comes up against Chopin,” says Gergely Bogányi. “However, my enthusiasm for the composer was so great that I decided to learn all his works.”
