The music of Bach never needs an ‘occasion’. It is a pleasure to listen to at any time and the ‘message’ of his music is relevant in all ages. Today we look on his cantatas like this as well, even though at one time the text of these compositions (as well as the way they were put to music) was closely connected to the liturgical content of the given Sunday service. Cantatas associated with five Sundays throughout the year are performed at this Wednesday concert featuring György Vashegyi and his ensembles. However, there is one cantata, No. 90, that Bach actually presented on a Sunday in November, at the end of the ecclesiastical year starting with the period of Advent. Thus, performance of this cantata has some spiritual relevance, at least from the aspect of the order of worship observed by the church. The cantata sheet music has survived in the original handwritten version of Bach, although unusually this manuscript provides very little in the way of directions concerning the accompanying instruments. In cases that are far from straightforward, it is up to the performers of the piece at the time to reach a decision on the choice of instruments. But for the moment, let’s just keep what György Vashegyi considers is the ideal, authentic sound for this particular concert on 8 November a secret!
