An immensely ambitious Liszt composed a great many orchestral works in the 1850s, including symphonic poems, symphonies and concertos. It was at this time he wrote Festive Sounds, originally for a wedding ceremony, the first version of Danse Macabre, and a mass for the consecration of the Esztergom Basilica. The evening’s young pianist, Marcell Szabó won the 14th Andor Földes Piano Competition, came away with the special prize from the 2008 Nagoya Piano Competition, and came in first at the 2014 Szeged International Béla Bartók Piano Competition. The row of prestigious prizes continued last year: he became third at the 33rd International Delia Steinberg Piano Competition (Madrid), and won the 14th International Île de France Piano Competition (Paris). The Mass, writes Klára Hamburger, “is one of the outstanding compositions of Liszt’s creative zenith, the Weimar period: an imaginative, emotional, creative piece, masterfully concentrated, settled and unified in style. It is a worthy companion of the period’s great symphonic, piano and concerto pieces. What is more, it was written with greater care, more dedication, than most of the others.
