EUphony – Central European Youth Orchestra were formed in 2010 by the music conservatories of Zagreb and Budapest. The international ensemble constantly evolving in the different countries are nourished by a stream of music students from Central European universities, besides Hungary mainly Austria and the Balkans. After learning the joint programme, the orchestra tour neighbouring countries. In 2018, the EUphony project is being hosted by the Anton Bruckner Private University of Linz. For the first time, participants are also arriving from Germany. The concept has also been expanded: institutions are not only delegating students but teachers, too (as principal instrumentalists in the joint ensemble), and chamber music productions are also being prepared. This year, the young students have taken on the first symphony by Brahms as well as two rarely performed works. Richard Strauss completed Metamorphoses for string orchestra in the final months of the Second World War. It was scored for 23 instruments. The solo trumpet gets a place (albeit not as prominent) as the piano in Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1. The Soviet composer’s concerto is performed by Moscow-born pianist Julia Okruashvili.
