This concert by two world-famous soloists dedicated to chamber music, the Dutch violin virtuoso and the Russian-born cellist, holds enormous promise. “His playing combines poetry and exquisite delicacy with great temperament and brilliant technique,” Rostropovich has said of Mischa Maisky, the only cellist to have studied with not only him but Piatigorsky as well. During a career of unparalleled richness, he has worked on many occasions with Janine Jansen and the Israeli pianist Itamar Golan, who in this concert swaps places at the piano with Lily Maisky, daughter of Mischa Maisky. Tchaikovsky composed only a few chamber works and initially could not bring himself to write the Trio in A minor despite the urging of his patron Nadezhda von Meckto. In the end, it was the death in 1823 of his close friend and mentor Nicolai Rubenstein that triggered a change of heart: the work comprising two grandiose movements was composed in his memory. The loss of another friend of Shostakovich, the polymath Ivan Sollertinsky, inspired the Trio in E minor dating from 1944.
