Hungarian conductor Henrik Nánási, who was born in Pécs, has been musical director of the Komische Oper Berlin since 2012. In 2013 the Opernwelt magazine named the institution Opera House of the Year, and in 2015 the company received the International Opera Award. Nánási made his debut in the United States in the 2015–2016 season, conducting The Marriage of Figaro at the Chicago Lyric Opera. He also went back to Valencia, where he conducted Verdi’s Macbeth, with Plácido Domingo in the title role. The latter production earned him the 2016 Helga de Oro for the best conductor. Nánási has already worked with the company of the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden (Puccini: Turandot), and that of the Bavarian State Opera (Verdi: La traviata), has conducted in the Verona Arena (Bizet: Carmen), the Zurich Opera (Mozart: The Marriage of Figaro), the Palace of Arts in Valencia (Bartók: Bluebeard’s Castle), and the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona (Mozart: The Magic Flute). Several of the productions he conducted have been released on DVD. He is joined at the Spring Festival by Polina Pasztircsák, a marvellous and enchanting soprano who will sing in a symphony by Mahler, and by Michael Barenboim, a violinist who is equally at home in various styles, and who will perform a piece by Korngold.
