The life and career of Zoltán Kodály, renowned composer, musicologist, music educator, and folk music researcher, had numerous connections with the Liszt Academy. Beginning in 1900, he studied composition under János Koessler while also pursuing Hungarian and German studies at Pázmány Péter University in Budapest. He earned his diploma in 1904, and his graduation concert took place in 1906. From the following year, Kodály taught music theory at the institution and, from 1908, composition. In the autumn of 1918, when the Liszt Academy was granted college status, he was elected deputy director. However, after the fall of the Hungarian Soviet Republic, a disciplinary investigation led to the annulment of his appointment. He was only permitted to teach composition again from 1921. Although Kodály retired from the Academy in 1940, his connection with the institution continued. In keeping with a long-standing tradition, the Liszt Academy will commemorate the birthday of this great reformer of Hungarian choral culture with a concert this year as well.
