Once again, the Kamara.hu Festival finds its inspiration in the life of a legendary artist. Curated by the celebrated piano duo Izabella Simon and Dénes Várjon, the festival has long been known for its rich tapestry of historical, biographical, and interdisciplinary connections. This year, they turn their focus to the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Her life and work, at once tragic yet sublime, profound yet vibrant, provide the perfect “canvas” for a chamber music programme.

The 2026 concert series does more than simply pay homage to Mexican and Spanish culture; it explores the work of Kahlo’s contemporaries and casts a spotlight on a variety of compelling, often poignant, female narratives. The programme also touches upon her tumultuous marriage to Diego Rivera and her clandestine affair with Leon Trotsky.

Throughout the selected works, one can hear echoes of Frida’s yearning for freedom, her courage, and her private grief. Characterised by somber hues, surrealist sensibilities, and a masterful portrayal of tension, this year’s Kamara.hu promises to be perhaps the most contrast-rich edition in the festival’s history.

The artistic directors dedicate this year’s festival to the memory of Imre Földes, the beloved and highly respected professor of the Liszt Academy, who passed away recently.
