“...István Thomán, former teacher of Bartók and Dohnányi, held a Beethoven evening at the Liszt Academy. Such endeavors are often threatened by the aesthetic demands of unity and variety. While unity naturally arises from hearing one composer’s thoughts and emotions throughout the evening, it is a great artistic challenge to bring variety into this unity. Beethoven’s rich imagination helps us in this regard, but only an artist who finds the key to this diversity can present it without evoking monotony. Thomán belongs to these great artists...”
These words by Elemér Sereghy, published in the Nemzeti Újság on November 4, 1919, are equally applicable to Gábor Farkas, President of the Liszt Academy and Head of the Keyboard and Harp Department. Like his predecessor Thomán, Farkas’s “...intuition not only captures Beethoven externally but also uncovers the metaphysical beauty and deepest essence of his works.”
