Ellа Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra – names familiar to every parent and grandparent coming to Liszt Kids events. The melodies that made them famous, however, have also been heard by children, as they still ring out as hits today on the radio, in shopping malls, and in the most unexpected places. Perhaps there is no other genre where the character of the voice has as much space as in jazz. Some conquer hearts with their velvet voices, while others become legends with a raspy sound. In a jazz band, the singer is one of the instruments. They improvise with the others, competing melodically, rhythmically, and creatively. In the Hangszálak (Vocal Cords) season’s matinée dedicated to the story of jazz, the internationally recognized Karosi Júlia will arrive with her quartet to showcase what jazz singing is all about and how jazz melodies have infiltrated classical music. We will learn how many ways a jazz singer can play with their voice and whether there is a connection between jazz and folk music. Warning, tune-stickiness risk!
