The Liszt Academy String Orchestra offers a concert that appeals to both classical and folk music enthusiasts, while also providing a relaxing experience for those who appreciate the sound of chamber orchestras. The performance begins with Leó Weiner’s Divertimento No. 1, featuring movements – like the often independently performed “Fox Dance” – which evoke Hungarian dance melodies that the composer heard on the wax cylinder recordings of the Museum of Ethnography. Sándor Veress had an even closer relationship with folk music than Weiner; he worked alongside Lajtha, Bartók, and Kodály as a folk song researcher. Although the entire musical material was written by the composer, the influence of his years immersed in peasant music is clearly evident. Following the intermission, the concert concludes with Dvořák’s timeless Serenade for Strings in E major. This piece for string orchestra is a quintessential romantic composition, rich with melodies and moods that captivate the audience.
