Variart Trio sums up its mission: young people, musicians, friends. Indeed, the members have been playing together since they were Liszt Academy students. The ensemble has been promoting the string trio genre through its concerts, and its ever-expanding repertoire ranges from Viennese classical to contemporary music. Their programmes also include works by lesser-known foreign and Hungarian composers. Beethoven’s string trios are a rarity, and the composer presumably treated them as studies for his later quartets. Weiner’s 1908 work was well received, and critics in the press of the time described it as a new level of music compared to his previous work. The concert programme is completed with Jean Françaix’s Trio of 1933.
