October 2014 master classes

Baroque singing master classes are being held on 1, 8 and 15 October by Éva Lax (solo singing teacher at the Weiner Leó Secondary School of Music, associate professor of ELTE University, Italian Department) for ecclesiastical music and other specialist students of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. The course revolves around the development of 16-17th century monody and related issues of performing, with a lecture on the first occasion followed by two practical classes. Classes are held in room 302 of the Old Academy of Music. Active participation is allowed primarily for students of the Church Music Department, all students of the Liszt Academy can apply as passive participants, and outsiders can join by prior agreement and subject to available capacity.

Richard Taruskin
 

Professor of Music at Berkeley University Richard Taruskin will hold a lecture on the aesthetics of Stravinsky and the possibility of analysing music, primarily for DLA and PhD, MA students of the Academy, between 10 am – 1 pm on 7 October. The lecture will be in room 018 of the Ligeti György building. Professor Taruskin will also explore a famously difficult-to-interpret piece by Stravinsky and another by Boulez. Performances will be followed by Q&A sessions as well as debate. The American musicologist-music critic was awarded a doctorate from Columbia University in 1975 for his thesis on Russian opera from the 1860s. Between 1973-1987 he taught at Columbia University, since when he has been at Berkeley University, California. His principal areas of research are Russian music from the 18th century to the present, and theoretical aspects of Stravinsky's music. He has published papers on 15th century chanson, the early music movement, he wrote monographs on Stravinsky and Mussorgsky, and he is the author of the six-volume Oxford History of Western Music.

Miklós Perényi will hold a violoncello master class in the morning of 7, 8 October in room X of the main building of the Liszt Academy on Liszt Ferenc Square. Only students of the Liszt Academy are permitted to participate actively, but anyone is welcome to apply in a non-active role. The hugely talented Miklós Perényi was admitted to the foundation course of the Liszt Ferenc College of Music at the age of seven, where he was the student first of Miklós Zsámboki, and then from 1959 Ede Banda. Later he participated in master classes by Enrico Mainardi in Salzburg, Luzern and at the Santa Cecilia Accademia, Rome, where he was awarded a diploma in 1962. In 1965 and 1966, and then between 1969-1972, he received invitations to master classes by Pablo Casals. He has taught at the Liszt Academy since 1974. Jana Bouskova, one of the world's most renowned and respected harpists, will give a master class on Monday 11 October 2014 (room X, main building of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music). The artist, who has numerous international prizes and awards, has appeared on stage with the greatest orchestras, and she is also a committed exponent of chamber music. She has performed together in concert with such major artists as Maxim Vengerov, Christian Tetzlaff, Yuri Bashmet, Mstislav Rostropovich and Emmanuel Pahud. As well as pursuing an international soloist career, she teaches at the music academies of Brussels and Prague. She regularly holds master classes as a guest of numerous international harp festivals, and she has also spoken at symposiums all over the world. Her repertoire, which is extremely broad and displays many different styles, includes several solo and chamber music pieces dedicated to her. Only students of the Liszt Academy can apply to attend the master class as active participants, while the organizers welcome everybody as passive listeners.

Ildikó Kertész, known as a specialist of the Baroque flute, welcomes all interested in early music to room -125 of the Liszt Academy Ligeti György building between 13-15 October 2014. Ildikó Kertész is soloist of the Orfeo Orchestra and member of Campinela ensemble, she has held courses at the Juilliard School (New York), the Curtis Institute (Philadelphia) and Rice University, Houston, and she has performed together with the English Baroque Soloists, Concerto Köln, Les Adieux, Capella Coloniensis, Capella Savaria and the Festetics String Quartet. Her recordings include flute sonatas by Kleinknecht and Krebs, Haydn's Sun quartets and flute quintets by Mozart. The course is open to all students and artists interested in the performance practice of early music. Performing on the course is possible with Baroque and modern instruments, and chamber groups are also welcome.
